Feeling With
"Feeling with" - compassion - is often made difficult by an inability to envision many feelings sharing the same present. The sudden, painless death of a dearly beloved, handicapped 90-year-old parent from overeating at a holiday dinner can at one and the same time provoke grief, joy, and humor. Similarly, sadness shared with suffering humanity must share the joy and humor of its songs, its wisdom, and its hilariously ridiculous follies.
